What is Bird Language?

Expand Your Senses with Bird Language

Interpreting Bird Language is an art form.

The calls, postures, and other behaviors of birds convey much information to those who understand their patterns.

The attentive, trained observer can deduce through bird language the location of predators and other forces on the landscape.

The reaction of birds and animals also speaks volumes about the awareness and behavior of the observer. In this way, birds become a barometer for one’s own awareness of the landscape, both inner and outer.

The voices of the birds become a beacon that enrapture the senses in a three-dimensional game of hide and seek that is being played on the land and in the air.

Predator and prey, observer and observed merge into one as the language of the birds calls us on a journey of connection and wonder.

Why This Site?

Bird Language.com is a project of the Shikari Tracking Guild, and is dedicated to helping people learn this amazing skill while deepening their understanding of the natural world.

This site offers resources, tips, and even a free e-course to help you in the journey of learning bird language.

The Shikari Tracking Guild was founded by Jon Young and Ingwe in the early 1980’s. The mission of the Guild is to help preserve and share the best practices of the nearly lost,  yet powerful art of holistic wildlife tracking as practiced by the indigenous hunter-gatherers that mentored both Jon & Ingwe.

Today, after years of research, we formed the 8 Shields Institute to host a number of activities and research processes aimed at preserving best practices in mentoring and culture.

Because of its powerful contributions to our understanding of mentoring nature connection, 8 Shields Institute is the hosting organization for the Shikari Tracking Guild.
